HORLIVKA, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's acting president (Oleksandr Turchynov) has called for the deployment of United Nations peacekeeping troops in the east of the country, where pro-Russian insurgents have occupied buildings in nearly 10 cities. In a telephone conversation with Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon, he suggested that an "anti-terrorist operation" could be conducted jointly by Ukrainian security forces and UN peacekeepers. That's according to the presidential web site.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have started the week higher, on some strong retail sales numbers. U.S. markets ended last week with two days of losses over anxiety that earnings growth was faltering. And those concerns, combined with the continuing crisis in Ukraine, have brought down global markets today.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans have been spending more on cars, furniture and a number of other products -- driving retail sales higher in March by the largest amount in 18 months. The Commerce Department says sales rose by 1.1 percent. It also revised February's gain to 0.7 percent, more than double the previous estimate. Sales of automobiles climbed 3.1 percent. The strong overall sales gain was evidence that the economy is emerging from a harsh winter with some momentum.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — The man accused of killing three people outside a Jewish community center and a Jewish retirement complex near Kansas City is a white supremacist who has frequently called for genocide against Jews. According to a U.S.-based terror monitoring group, SITE, Frazier Glenn Cross has posted thousands of messages on the website of a neo-Nazi forum -- the most recent of which came Saturday. He's being held on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder.
PLEASANT GROVE, Utah (AP) — Authorities in Utah are trying to find out how a woman could have killed seven babies after giving birth to them over the course of a decade -- with no one noticing. Megan Huntsman is being held on murder charges. Neighbors say she seemed to have lived a normal existence. Her estranged husband discovered the bodies of the babies in cardboard boxes in the garage after recently getting out of prison.
