AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — A group of eastern Georgia high school students used thousands discarded plastic bags to make sleeping mats for the homeless.
The Augusta Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/1iJKT5a ) seven students from Westside High School, Glenn Hills High and Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School teamed up to create 15 waterproof sleeping mats from about 6,000 plastic bags. The project was part of the Georgia Community Problem Solving competition, and earned them a trip to a national competition later this year in Iowa.
Westside senior Amanda Dojack says the students cut each bag in half and tied the pieces together before weaving the mats on a homemade loom.
Aside from addressing pollution, students said they wanted to use their project to help improve the lives of the needy.
