SLOVYANSK, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine's government is preparing a military response. The country's president says it will launch a "large-scale anti-terrorist operation" against attacks from armed pro-Russian forces. The Ukrainian leader says the army will be used to prevent Russian forces from moving into eastern Ukraine, as they did in Crimea. He's pledging amnesty to any Russian supporters who lay down their arms by tomorrow morning. Backers of Russia have taken control of a number of government buildings in eastern Ukraine in recent days.
PERTH, Australia (AP) — No new sounds have been heard since Tuesday by an Australian ship that is dragging a U.S. Navy device through the southern Indian Ocean, trying to pick up signals from the flight recorder of the missing Malaysian jetliner. It could mean the batteries in the plane's black boxes may have finally died. Crews are continuing their search for debris ad for any sounds that might still be produced.
WASHINGTON (AP) — According to Republican Sen. Rand Paul, the United States "can't invite the whole world" inside its borders. Paul says one of his potential rivals for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, Jeb Bush, was inarticulate when he said immigrants who come to the United States illegally are committing an "act of love." Paul tells ABC's "This Week" that Bush, a former Florida governor, should have kept his focus on controlling U.S. borders.
VALPARAISO, Chile (AP) — The number of dead in a raging fire in the Chilean port city of Valparaiso has reached at least 16. Chile's president says it could be "the worst fire in the city's history." She's warning that the number of dead will increase once authorities can enter the smoldering remains of homes. More than 500 homes have been destroyed.
NEW YORK (AP) — Collecting more than $41 million in its second week of release, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has held off "Rio 2" at the weekend box office. According to studio estimates, the Marvel superhero narrowly beat the animated family film in a battle of sequels.
