ORLAND, Calif. (AP) — Federal safety investigators say the driver of a Fedex tractor-trailer that struck a bus carrying Los Angeles area high school students didn't appear to brake before a fiery collision that left 10 dead. A National Transportation Safety Board member says the truck left no tire marks as it careened across a median and slammed into the bus.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say an officer shot and killed an 86-year-old man who they say killed his 65-year-old daughter then pointed a shotgun at officers. Authorities say Jack Calvello called 911 today and said he'd shot his daughter. Police say Calvello refused to put down his gun when officers arrived at the home in Queens and was shot once in the torso.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry is very concerned about recent attacks by armed militants in eastern Ukraine. And he expressed that concern today in a phone call with Russia's foreign minister. The State Department says Kerry made clear that if Russia doesn't take steps to de-escalate in the region and move its troops back from the border, there would be additional consequences.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The flap over the man named to represent Iran at the United Nations continues. Washington has refused to grant him a visa. That's because he was a member of the group responsible for the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. One Iranian lawmaker is urging the Islamic Republic to stand up to what he calls "bullying" from the U.S.

UNDATED (AP) — Authorities in Florida say a man who stepped out of his car in Alligator Alley to view one of the deadly reptiles was bitten by a poisonous snake. A Broward County spokesman says the 29-year-old man was bitten on the foot by a pit viper this evening after he and his girlfriend stopped to check out an alligator on I-75 eastbound. The man is hospitalized in stable condition.
