SCHOOL MERGERS
ANDERSON — School officials across Indiana resistant to consolidating smaller districts are taking issue with a report by Ball State researchers that suggests such mergers are inevitable. The policy brief by the Ball State University Center for Business and Economic Research found that dwindling enrollment and rising education costs could force small schools to join forces to reduce overhead. WEST LAFAYETTE — A church that has held services since 1939 will become the property of Purdue University next month, leaving the campus ministry with a one-year lease to give it time to find a new home. Joe Hornett, chief operating officer of Purdue Research Foundation, said the university's real estate arm is paying $2.4 million for University Church. The deal is scheduled to close May 1. ENDANGERED OAK
INDIANAPOLIS — Residents of an Indianapolis neighborhood are seeking help to save an oak tree that has stood watch over the area for centuries. The Chinquapin oak on the city's east side is more than 18 feet in diameter and believed to be more than 300 years old. But it's being attacked by the oak lace mite, which eats the chlorophyll out of the leaves and robs the tree of nourishment. It also is filled with dead wood that needs to be removed.
