TORONTO (AP) — Canada's prime minister has announced a state funeral for former longtime finance minister Jim Flaherty.
Flaherty died Thursday of a massive heart attack just three weeks after stepping down from the job. He spent eight years in the role, the longest-serving finance minister among the Group of Seven leading industrial economies.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper's office said the funeral will take place Wednesday in Toronto.
Flaherty was Harper's only finance minister since Harper took power in 2006. He is credited with getting Canada back on track to a balanced budget after pumping stimulus money into the economy following the 2008 financial crisis.
Politicians from all parties have been paying tribute to Flaherty. Finance ministers of the G-20 honored Flaherty at the start of their meetings in Washington Thursday
