REACTION TO STEPHEN COLBERT IS POSITIVE, FOR THE MOST PART

NEW YORK (AP) — David Letterman is pleased with his replacement. He says Stephen Colbert (kohl-BAYR') has always been "a real friend" to him. He says he's "flattered" that CBS chose him, though he thinks they just "wanted another guy with glasses." Colbert's former colleague on "The Daily Show" tells New York magazine that Colbert is "a uniquely talented individual." Jon Stewart says Colbert has "gears he hasn't even shown people yet." Jimmy Fallon welcomed the competition. He tweeted Colbert to congratulate him on his new first name: Jimmy. Not everyone is happy, of course. Rush Limbaugh says by choosing Colbert CBS "has just declared war on the heartland of America." He also mispronounced Colbert's name, calling him KOHL'-buhrt.

WHICH STEPHEN COLBERT WILL SHOW UP TO HOST "LATE SHOW?

NEW YORK (AP) — Fans of "The Colbert Report" (kohl-BAYR' ree-POHR') don't know what they're in for when Steve Colbert (kohl'-BAYR') hosts "Late Show." Colbert has been playing a character all these years and doesn't intend to bring the character with him. Few people know what he's like in real life. Colbert once told AP Radio that he sometimes doesn't know who he's supposed to be when shows up at events: himself, or the ultra-conservative he plays on TV. He won't have that problem much longer.

STEPHEN COLBERT-LATE NIGHT REACTION

NEW YORK (AP) — Stephen Colbert (kohl-BAYR') says he started watching David Letterman when he was a freshman in college. Colbert adds he learned more from Letterman than he did in any of his classes. On the "The Colbert Report" (kohl-BAYR' ree-POHR') last night, Colbert said Letterman has influenced every host who came after him. Colbert jokes he doesn't envy the person who'll be sitting in Letterman's chair. Jon Stewart says he's thrilled his friend and Comedy Central colleague is taking over for Letterman. On "The Daily Show" last night, Stewart said Colbert is a "genuinely good man" who deserves all the success in the world. Stewart jokes with Colbert on CBS, he'll no longer need a cable subscription to see his friend. Colbert will be competing against Jimmy Fallon on the "Tonight Show." But Fallon says there won't be any late-night war. He says instead, they'll be having a dance-off.

''AMERICAN IDOL"

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Perhaps it's now back to the tuba for Malaya (mih-LY'-uh) Watson. The high school tuba player was voted off "American Idol" last night. The viewers' decision was final, because the judges used their once-per-season save to keep Sam Woolf in the competition last week. He was safe on last night's show. Malaya sang "I Am Changing" as her farewell song and she was emotional all the way through it. CJ Harris was the other person in the bottom two this week.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Caleb and Dexter nearly couldn't sing Wednesday night on "American Idol." Caleb tells People.com that his voice "totally went out" during rehearsal. Dexter was also sick. He says his voice was cracking during rehearsal. He says if it wasn't for the doctor who had "the magic touch," he would've had to "lip-synch or something."

He thinks the title of the film is "The Passion of Nigel the Cockatoo and His Heart-Rending Crusade for Justice and Redemption."
