Stun gun used on rancher's son in cattle roundup
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Federal police used a stun gun on a son of a Nevada rancher fighting a roundup of cattle that he claims have historical grazing rights northeast of Las Vegas.
Family members told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that rancher Cliven Bundy's 57-year-old sister also was knocked to the ground during a Wednesday confrontation involving dozens of protesters and several U.S. Bureau of Land Management rangers.
No serious injuries were reported and officials said no arrests were made.
A hand-held video shows protesters and law enforcement officers holding yellow stun guns and leashed dogs yelling at each other as trucks involved in the roundup attempt to drive through on State Route 170.
The BLM has shut down a 1,200-square-mile area while contractors gather about 900 cattle that officials say are trespassing.
TARKANIAN HOSPITALIZED
Former UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian in hospital
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Former UNLV basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian has been admitted to a Las Vegas hospital after relatives say he was feeling weak and having trouble breathing.
Tarkanian's son, Danny Tarkanian, says his 83-year-old father was also struggling to keep his eyes open when he was taken to Valley Hospital on Wednesday night.
The elder Tarkanian remained sedated at the hospital Thursday morning while doctors tried to determine what was behind his ailments.
Tarkanian was inducted last year into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. He took three schools to the NCAA tournament but is best known for his teams at UNLV that made four Final Four appearances and won it all in 1990.
The coach won 784 games in his career, 509 of them at UNLV.
CLARK COUNTY SCHOOLS-HIRING
Clark County schools hiring 2,000 teachers
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The Clark County School District plans to hire 2,000 teachers to accommodate growing student enrollment and backfill for teachers who are resigning or retiring.
The district says it will hire about 500 support staffers, including bus drivers and classroom aides. Officials say they're also hoping to ramp up their pool of substitute teachers.
Part of the demand comes from new state mandates that require smaller kindergarten classes, and thus more of them.
District officials say they are anticipating record-breaking enrollment of nearly 318,000 students next year, which is up about 3,300 from this school year.
RESTAURANT CRASH-VEGAS
Vegas man in Egg & I crash plans to plead guilty
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A 19-year-old Las Vegas man accused of plowing into a restaurant last April and injuring 10 people says he'll plead guilty.
Victims who showed up to court expecting to testify against Gage Lindsey on Wednesday instead heard he planned to plead guilty April 24 to two counts of driving under the influence and causing substantial bodily harm.
Lindsey's lawyer, Sean Sullivan, says prosecutors plan to drop four other charges as part of the deal.
Prosecutors say Lindsey had Xanax and more than three times the legal limit of marijuana in his blood when he crashed April 1, 2013 into the Egg & I restaurant on Sahara Avenue.
Victim Alberta Guzman tells KSNV-TV she's grateful to be alive, but says her family has struggled physically and emotionally in the crash aftermath.
HILLARY CLINTON-VEGAS
Hillary Clinton to appear at Vegas conference
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is continuing a speaking tour with a stop in Nevada for a keynote appearance at a trade conference at a Las Vegas Strip resort.
The former U.S. secretary of state and Democratic senator from New York is due to speak Thursday before the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries meeting at the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino.
Clinton has been traveling the country giving paid speeches to industry organizations and appearing before key Democratic party constituents.
During a speech in San Francisco on Tuesday, Clinton said she was seriously considering a presidential bid and all it would entail.
Speaking later Tuesday at the World Affairs Council of Oregon in Portland, Clinton called the empowerment of women an economic imperative.
She's also got a book coming out in June.
NORTH LAS VEGAS-BUDGET
Beleaguered N. Vegas strikes deals with 2 unions
LAS VEGAS (AP) — North Las Vegas officials say they've reached agreements with two labor unions and are working to settle with others as they try to stave off a possible takeover by the state.
Mayor John Lee announced the deal Wednesday evening, after a day of talks that involved Gov. Brian Sandoval.
The governor hosted negotiations in his Las Vegas office a day before city managers were to present a tentative plan to deal with an $18 million shortfall.
North Las Vegas has been trying to stem its bleeding for several years. In January, a state judge ruled the city could not withhold $25 million in pay raises to public safety employees.
Last week city officials proposed a $7.7 million settlement with the unions, saying the alternative would be steeps cuts and layoffs.
INMATE'S APPEAL SPURNED
Court spurns appeal by Arizona death row inmate
PHOENIX (AP) — Saying that finality is long overdue, a federal appeals court is spurning the latest appeal on behalf of an Arizona death row inmate convicted of the 1986 killing of a Nevada man.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week refused to reconsider a previous ruling that turned down an appeal on behalf of Graham Sanders Henry.
The appellate court said it won't reconsider Henry's appeal because that would delay Supreme Court review of the case, including Henry's convictions for what the court's order called his "ghastly crimes" from nearly 28 years ago.
Henry was sentenced to die for killing Las Vegas-area resident Roy Estes. He was driven to the desert north of Kingman in Arizona's Mohave County where he was stabbed in the heart and his throat cut.
CASINO UNION PICKETING-VEGAS
Union plans picketing at downtown Vegas casinos
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Union members plan to picket in downtown Las Vegas this weekend to draw attention to ongoing contract talks.
A Culinary Union Local 226 statement says Saturday demonstrations near The D and Four Queens will include food service workers and bartenders from those properties and 10 others.
Contracts expired last June, and union members voted in February to end a contract extension.
Members voted March 27 to authorize a strike if no agreement is reached.
Culinary and bartender unions have new five-year deals with most large Las Vegas casino operators.
Talks continue with the Binion's, El Cortez, Four Queens, Fremont, Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Las Vegas Club, Las Vegas Plaza, Main Street Station and The D, Margaritaville on the Strip, and union workers at Brady Laundries in North Las Vegas.

Exchange board to set fees for 2015
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A state board will try to predict how many people will sign up for health coverage through Nevada's health insurance exchange in the upcoming year.
The decision before members of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange board on Thursday is directly tied to monthly fees those participants will pay to keep the exchange operating next year.
As more people sign up, the less they will need to be charged to cover exchange operating expenses.
But enrollment is hard to project. Last year officials set a target of 118,000. That number was cut to 50,000 after persistent problems with the system prevented many people from completing their applications.
Current rates are $4.95 per month for health plans. Those fees will double if not triple in 2015, depending on new enrollment projections.
OFFICERS-BOOK DRIVE
Reno police donate nearly 500 children's books
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Rounding up bad guys isn't the only priority of Reno police officers.
During the month of March, officers and staff of the Reno Police Department collected nearly 500 children's books as part of the Washoe County School District's community book drive.
The books were picked up Wednesday and will be distributed to local schools.
Officials say the books will be given to students and used by volunteer tutors to help children who do not read at their average grade level improve their reading and literacy skills.
Schools with limited book purchasing funds will be given priority to receive the donations.
