McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Another member of a South Texas school board is facing criminal charges after authorities say he was found with more than 1,200 pounds of marijuana in his vehicle.
The Texas Department of Public Safety told The Monitor in McAllen (http://bit.ly/1eesjoR ) that 31-year-old Felix Hernandez Jr. was arrested Saturday and charged with being in possession of between 50 and 2,000 pounds of marijuana. DPS says a traffic violation prompted a trooper to stop Hernandez, a member of the Progreso school board.
He remained in the Hidalgo County jail Tuesday on a $1.25 million bond.
Federal prosecutors have accused former Progreso school board President Michael Vela of being involved in a bribery and kickback scheme. His father Jose Vela Jr., who managed the school district's transportation and maintenance, is accused of similar charges.
