ARLINGTON, Wash. (AP) — Crews with search dogs have been continuing their efforts in the debris left by the mudslide in Washington state six days ago, but authorities say they're unlikely to find anyone still alive. Authorities had planned an announcement today that would substantially raise the death toll, but they've delayed it until this evening as the medical examiner's office continues to try to identify the victims.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Democrats have denounced the report from a team of lawyers that cleared New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie of any involvement in the lane-closing scandal -- but Christie today is defending the report. He says it will be "tested by the other investigations that are going on," by federal prosecutors and state lawmakers. The report, funded by taxpayers, was produced by a law firm Christie hired.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks have finished the day higher, as traders were encouraged by an increase in consumer spending last month. The Dow finished with a 58-point gain, while the S&P 500 rose eight points and the Nasdaq composite gained four points.
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern University confirms it will appeal a federal agency's ruling that its football players can create the nation's first union of college athletes. A university official says the decision "overlooked or completely ignored" testimony indicating that student athletes aren't employees. A regional director of the National Labor Relations Board ruled Wednesday that players at the Big Ten school qualify as employees under federal law and therefore may unionize.
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Federal transportation officials are accusing the oil industry of failing to provide the information that regulators need in order to determine how dangerous it is to move crude oil by rail. The effort follows several accidents that highlighted the explosive properties of fuel coming from the oil shale fields on the Northern Plains. A derailment last July killed 47 people and destroyed a large section of downtown in a community in Quebec.
