MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — A defense lawyer says a court in Bahrain has given 28 people, among them a photojournalist, prison sentences of up to 10 years on charges of attacking a police station and vandalism during protests.
Fadel al-Sawad says 25 including the journalist received 10-year prison sentences, three got three years' imprisonment and three were found not guilty Wednesday in the case, which relates to protests in mid-2012. The kingdom's Shiite majority began protesting en masse that year for greater rights from the Gulf-Arab nation's Sunni monarchy.
Al-Sawad, who plans to appeal, says photographer Ahmed Humaidan and 27 others in the case have been imprisoned since December 2012.
The Committee to Protect Journalists says Humaidan was imprisoned for his work documenting anti-government protests. Reporters Without Borders says nine journalists are detained in Bahrain.
