ISLAMABAD (AP) — Police say a tourist van has plunged off the road in rugged terrain near a hill resort in northern Pakistan, killing 10 people.

Police officer Mudassir Abbasi says the tourists, all Pakistanis, were returning Sunday evening to the garrison city of Rawalpindi near Islamabad after spending the weekend in the resort town of Murree. The accident happened near Salgaran village.

Abbasi said rescuers have recovered the bodies and the eight injured after struggling with metal twisted by the van's 30-meter (100 foot) fall.

He said speeding at a sharp curve apparently caused the accident but police were investigating the matter.

Battered roads, poorly maintained passengers vehicles and massive disregard for traffic rules often cause such accidents in Pakistan.
