DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Less than a week ago, Cal Poly was 10-19, seeded seventh in the nine-team Big West Conference tournament and seemingly headed for an early bus ride home.

Somehow, someway, the Mustangs won three games to become just the 20th team with a losing record to arrive at the NCAA tournament.

Now upbeat coach Joe Callero points out that if his team wins the NCAA title, it'll finish above .500.

The Mustangs (13-19) meet Texas Southern in a First Four showdown Wednesday at the University of Dayton.

It's not as if the Tigers were making NCAA plans, either. Just 5-9 when 2014 began, Texas Southern (19-14) won its last nine games to earn a spot in this unlikeliest of matchups.
