NCAA TOURNAMENT

Let the games begin

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The NCAA men's basketball tournament gets underway this evening with two first-round games in Dayton, Ohio. In the first game of the night, Albany is facing Mount St. Mary's, while in the nightcap North Carolina State goes up against the Xavier Musketeers.

First-round play continues tomorrow night with two more games in Dayton; Cal Poly against Texas Southern and Tennessee against Iowa.

The winners of these four games advance to the second round, which begins Thursday.

NIT

Second-tier tourney gets going

UNDATED (AP) — The nation's oldest postseason college basketball tournament starts play tonight. No, it's not the NCAA tourny but the National Invitational Tournament. There are nine games being played this evening around the country. It all comes to an end Thursday, April 3, in New York's Madison Square Garden.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Cavs set to host James, again

UNDATED (AP) — It doesn't carry quite the weight it did a few years ago but LeBron James returns to Cleveland for another game against the Cavaliers tonight. In fact, he was in town recently to attend a Cavs game as a fan as he watched former teammate Zydrunas Ilgauskas (zih-DROO'-nuhs ihl-GOWS'-kuhs) have his jersey number retired by the team.

This evening, James returns with the Heat as a player and Miami is out to gain some ground on the Pacers in the Eastern Conference. Indiana, which has the night off, tops the East by 3 ½ games over the Heat.

Toronto's Raptors are looking to extend their three-game lead over the Nets in the Atlantic Division tonight with a game in Atlanta. The Hawks are currently holding down the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Blazers can solidify their hold on a playoff spot with a win tonight. Portland, which is six games back of Oklahoma City in the Northwest Division and in fifth place in the West, is hosting Milwaukee.

The final two games of the night feature the Wizards at Sacramento and Golden State home to Orlando.

NBA-KNICKS

Jackson set to be introduced

NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Jackson, who starred for the New York Knicks back in the early 1970's, is returning to the franchise today as the new man in charge. He was a key member of the Knicks teams that won the NBA championship in 1973 and later led the Bulls and Lakers to league titles as the coach. His last job in the NBA was the 2010-'11 season with the Lakers when he left coaching.

His coaching legacy is 11 NBA titles, six with the Bulls and five with the Lakers.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Ducks and Sharks resume Pacific Division quest

UNDATED (AP) — The two teams battling it out for the Pacific Division lead in the NHL are both on home ice tonight. In Anaheim, the Ducks are playing host to Washington, while in San Jose the Sharks are hosting the Panthers. Both the Ducks and Sharks start the day with 97 points, good for a first-place divisional tie and four points back of West leading St. Louis. The Blues have the night off.

That Anaheim-Washington game is key for the Capitals as well as they trail the Rangers by two points for the final playoff berth in the East. New York is on the road tonight for a game at Ottawa.

Boston starts play with a five-point lead over Pittsburgh in the Eastern Conference, and tonight the Bruins are at New Jersey while the Penguins are playing at home against Dallas. The Stars are two points behind Phoenix for the eighth and final playoff berth in the West.

Your remaining games this evening feature the Islanders at home to Minnesota, the Hurricanes at Columbus, Montreal at home to the Avs, Toronto at Detroit, the Flyers on the home ice against Chicago, the Sabres in Calgary and Edmonton's Oilers at home to Nashville.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-GEORGIA

Four players busted for cashing checks

ATLANTA (AP) — Four Georgia football players have been released on bond following their arrests Monday on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception. University of Georgia chief of police Jimmy Williamson says an investigation found that three players, starting safety Tray Matthews, defensive linemen Jonathan Taylor and James DeLoach, received double payments for stipend checks of $71.50 issued by the Georgia athletic department.

Williamson says the players deposited the paper checks through a mobile device and also cashed the checks at a convenience store.

Wide receiver Uriah LeMay was charged with cashing a roommate's check after the check already had been deposited through a mobile app.
