GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — New research laboratories are being touted by Spectrum Health as a major step toward becoming an academic institution.
The Grand Rapids Press reports ( http://bit.ly/1cFbkuK ) that the Basic and Translational Laboratories are in the Coopers Landing Building. Four main investigators use the labs to study diseases.
Sandra Rempel is vice president of research. She says the research programs complement Spectrum's clinical programs. Rempel came to Spectrum last year from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She will conduct research into brain tumor growth and invasion.
Other researchers will investigate treatments for obstructions in the urinary tract and ways to repair kidney damage, pediatric cancers and ways to prevent graft-vs-host disease.
The laboratories also support 13 new research positions, offering opportunities for medical residents, clinical fellows, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
