UTAH COUNTY — People should be wary of callers who claim they owe money to pay off a warrant, according to the Utah County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said the scam is an old one, but it appears to be making the rounds again after they received multiple reports of people being called and asked for money to pay off a warrant.

"The callers will identify themselves as being from the Utah County Sheriff's Office and have even used the name of an actual deputy who currently works for the Sheriff's Office," a statement from the Utah County Sheriff's Office reads.

In recent cases, investigators said the callers instruct the person they are speaking with to give them his or her credit card information or purchase a cash card and then call back with the PIN information of the card.

Deputies said the Utah County Sheriff's Office does have legitimate employees who may call and remind people of a warrant and provide instructions on how to pay for it or clear it up, but they will never ask for payment over the phone.

"If an employee of the Sheriff's Office calls they can tell you options for payment, but that will not include asking for any kind of credit, debit or other financial information," the statement reads.

Those with a warrant can pay their bail for a warrant or fine for a citation over the phone by calling the Utah County Justice Court at 801-851-7200.
