It is time to add a definition of marriage to the Constitution of the United States!
The U.S. Senate is scheduled to take a step in that direction next week by voting on Senate Joint Resolution 1, a constitutional amendment on marriage.
The wording of the proposed amendment is straightforward:
"Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman."
Such a national definition of marriage is needed primarily because of a growing trend by some courts across the nation to redefine marriage and make it something it is not. Judges in Massachusetts, for example, have already imposed gay marriage. And pending court cases in at least seven other states could lead to similar decisions.
In KSL's view, the dramatic step of amending the Constitution is essential to ending the confusion and preserving civilization's most fundamental institution. We urge Utah's two senators and their colleagues to cast a favorable vote. Then let the measure proceed through the ratification process until it becomes the 28th amendment to our national Constitution.
