SALT LAKE CITY — A man was taken into custody after firing a gun during a fight with his girlfriend Tuesday, police said.
After the man fired a shot with a handgun, the girlfriend left and called the police, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department. The woman was not injured during the incident, which occurred at about 7:30 a.m.
Investigators believe the man left in his vehicle, Hoyal said. The man was later identified by police as Steve Brinkerhoff, 38. Detectives later found Brinkerhoff in his home around 3:30 p.m.
Hoyal said Brinkerhoff refused to come out of his home. The Unified Police Department's SWAT team set up a containment and tried to negotiate with the man, but he still refused to come out. Brinkerhoff surrendered after the SWAT team used gas.
Nearby Mill Creek Elementary School was placed on a lockdown while the situation is resolved, according to the Granite School District. The district said there were still about 50 students in the school just before 5 p.m.
Other homes and businesses in the area were also evacuated as a safety precaution. The evacuation was lifted around 7:30 p.m.
Hoyal said through the course of the day they learned Brinkerhoff has possessed explosive devices in the past. Police searched Brinkerhoff's home, but didnt' locate any explosives.
Brinkerhoff is expected to be booked into Salt Lake County Jail.
