(KSL News) -- Fire chased a Salt Lake family out of their home today, but quick action by neighbors and firefighters kept it from spreading down the block.
When firefighters arrived at the house at 1520 West Wasatch Avenue shortly before noon, thick smoke was pouring out.
Flames started to burn through the roof and threatened the house next door. A woman who was home with two young children got out safely.
Once firefighters doused the flames, they put it out quickly.
Trey Dawson lives across the street. He hit the fire with a garden hose before firefighters arrived.
Trey Dawson, Neighbor: "Had to save that house from catching on fire. This one was gone, but had to keep it from spreading to that one. Had to keep it cool."
Scott Freitag, Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "The whole inside is gutted, so these people will be displaced and will need to find somewhere else to go. All of their goods have also been burned up."
The fire started in or near a utility room where a lot of flammable items were stored near a furnace and water heater. But firefighters do not know the specific cause.
