KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry has met today in Ukraine with that country's acting president, prime minister and foreign minister, as well as top parliamentary officials. It's a show of U.S. support for Ukraine's new leadership, as it deals with a Russian military takeover of Crimea. After today's meeting, Kerry urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to stand down. The Obama administration announced a $1 billion energy subsidy package for Ukraine as Kerry was arriving there. The United States is preparing economic sanctions -- something Kerry said "Russia is pushing us to do."
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker John Boehner (BAY'-nur) says President Barack Obama is offering what the speaker calls "perhaps his most irresponsible budget yet." The $3.9 trillion budget would pour money into programs aimed at boosting the economy -- including road building and education. There would be new spending for pre-school education and job training. And it includes $1 trillion in higher taxes over the next decade, mostly for the wealthiest Americans and corporations. Boehner says Americans who are looking for "jobs and opportunity" will find only "more government."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the reassuring words from Iran about not wanting nuclear weapons do not square with that country's actions. Speaking to a pro-Israel group in Washington, Netanyahu said the international community needs to exert more pressure to deny Iran the ability to make nuclear arms.
HERCULES, Calif. (AP) — Police are investigating a report of a brutal assault of a transgender teen as he was using a high school bathroom in Northern California. The Bay Area News Group reports the 15-year-old told police he was leaving a high school bathroom on Monday when three boys pushed him inside a stall and physically and sexually assaulted him. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. A new California law allows people to use a bathroom that matches the gender with which they identify. Police are treating the incident as a hate crime.
NEW YORK (AP) — United Airlines is getting tough on passengers with oversized carry-on bags. United has installed new bag-sizers at most airports, including some that are before security checkpoints. Employees are sending passengers with bags that are too big back to the ticket counter, where they check the bag and pay a $25 fee. United says it's trying to speed up the boarding process. Some travelers say it's part of a larger attempt by United to collect more fees.
