AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Some frigid weather has made for a dangerous drive to the polls this morning for some voters in the primary election in Texas. Polling locations around Austin were opening on a four-hour delay because of icy conditions.

Crowded fields in the Republican races for attorney general and other offices make it likely that there will be runoff votes in May.

State Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor. There's a three-way Republican dogfight to succeed him.

Today's balloting is another opportunity for Texans to vote for a candidate named George Bush. Republican George P. Bush is expected to easily defeat his little-known primary opponent in the race for land commissioner. Bush is the grandson and nephew of former presidents.

The free-for-all in some Republican races could push the state further to the right. Candidates have vowed to emulate the no-compromise style of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, a favorite of the tea party.

The nastiest race has been for lieutenant governor, where Republican David Dewhurst appears headed for his first runoff in 11 years on the job.
