GRANTSVILLE — Two 13-year-old boys from Magna had to be rescued Sunday from a sheet of ice in Grantsville Reservoir after it drifted away from shore.
The boys became stranded about 1:15 p.m. when the wind shifted, moving the chunk of ice away from shore, said Tooele County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Duke North.
Ice rescue swimmers from the Grantsville and North Tooele fire departments traveled across about 200 feet of open water to bring life preservers, floating boards and ropes to the boys.
"Once the boys were secured on the boards, the firemen on shore pulled them all to safety," North said.
An ambulance was on scene to warm the boys and transport them to Mountain West Medial Center in Tooele to be evaluated.
The boys were not injured during the approximately 45-minute rescue.
"We would like to caution everyone to stay off the ice this time of year as the warmer temperatures, wind and the snow runoff have made all ice unstable and very treacherous," North said.
