SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY — A former world-class athlete received South Salt Lake’s Firefighter of the Year Award.

In 2004, Lyndsie Hauck was getting ready for the skeleton World Cup competition, something she had been preparing for since she was 13. But Wednesday she was a member of the color guard at the South Salt Lake awards luncheon.

After her career as a skeleton athlete, she became a firefighter in South Salt Lake, and Wednesday she was named South Salt Lake’s Firefighter of the Year.

“Physical aspects of being an athlete, switching over to firefighter, it's pretty much the same, as well as team work,” Hauck said.

Chief Ron Morris said Hauck is the perfect example of a great athlete who brought all of her training, skills and talents to the fire department. He only wishes he had a hundred more like her.

“Very trained, very interested in learning more all the time, very energetic, a go-getter. She's just a joy to be around in the department,” Morris said.

Hauck said she was caught off guard by the award because it's simply an honor to do her job. Her boss and family say she is a perfect example of an athlete who made a career transition that will benefit many.
