DRAPER — Police identified Sandy resident Larry Darton as the man who died in a car accident early on New Year's Day.

Darton died Wednesday morning from what may have been the state's first and only alcohol-related vehicle fatality on the first day of 2014, police said.

As of Thursday morning, investigators were still looking into what caused the accident, according to Draper Police Sgt. David Harris. According to an earlier statement, they believe that alcohol may have played a role.

Draper police and the Unified Fire Department responded to a fatality from a car accident at 11500 S. 700 East at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday.

Darton, 54, had crashed his car into the back of a semitrailer that was parked, police said. He died at the scene.

No one was in the semitrailer at the time of the accident, and there were no passengers in Darton's vehicle.
