LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police say a 26-year-old man shot himself dead in a courtyard area at the Las Vegas Mormon temple while temple sessions were taking place inside.

Clark County coroner's officials say Scott Greer Bybee of Henderson died in the incident that happened a little after 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the campus on Temple View Drive.

Police Lt. Mark Reddon says no other people were threatened in the suicide, but the rest of the temple sessions were cancelled for the evening.

Spokeswoman Kristen Howey of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement calling the incident tragic, and saying the church is mindful of all those involved.

Temples are considered sacred sites reserved for rites including baptism and eternal marriage. Only church members in good standing are allowed inside.
