MURRAY — Troopers have three men in custody after a car fled from them on I-15, crashed on 4500 South, and the driver tried to escape early Thursday morning.

Trooper Nick Swallow said he tried to pull over the car with three men inside on I-15 northbound around 5 a.m. when it sped off. He saw it exit at 4500 South then crash into the median, and the driver took off running.

"You never know if someone is going to run from you, what they are thinking, if there are drugs. They always have the advantage on us because they know what they are going to do, we don't know what they are going to do," he said.

Swallow said training kicks in. His backup had arrived quickly, and he had several UHP officers and Murray officers there to stay with the car and the two passengers while he ran after the driver.

"He had hidden inside a big green bush and was hiding there," he said.

Swallow said the suspect gave up pretty easily when they found him. Swallow said when he got back to the car, he saw a gun.

"You always worry when you are chasing someone," he said. "You don't know where they are hiding, if they have a gun on them. Luckily this time he left the gun behind underneath the car."

"There was a stolen firearm inside the vehicle as well as drugs, drug paraphernalia, gang paraphernalia, and the vehicle itself came back stolen as well," Swallow said.

The three suspects were taken into custody. Their names have not yet been released.
