This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

Have you ever considered the importance of color on design work, especially in relation to other countries? It's probably not something you've really thought about … unless you're operating an international design firm, like Design of Today in Salt Lake City.

Owner Danell Murdock says colors are different for each market in the world. And if you're going to compete on a global scale, like Design of Today is, you have to be aware.... While bright red might be okay for South America, in London it would have to be changed to soft beiges or creams .... even East coast versus West Coast is different. That's just one of the many details her team at Design of Today handles.

This 17-year-old sophisticated graphic design firm has been designing graphics, advertising and promotions in many industries across the United States.... They specialize in creating style guides for their clients, which consist of patterns, graphics, icons, borders, packaging or branding … essentially creating the image of the campaign. They use the style guides to build the promotional toolkit their clients will use in promoting their product or service.

You'll find Design of Today in major markets like Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago, although in Salt Lake City, they're relatively unknown. The main focus is the entertainment industry — fact is, their first client when they launched was Universal Studios, with Yahoo following shortly after.

Danell says Design of Today has a very senior design team, with 11 people in the Salt Lake office ... and another rep in the Manhattan office. As a woman-owned firm, Design of Today is contributing to the 8.6 million women-owned firms in the U.S. that are generating over $1.3 trillion in revenue, according to the 2013 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report.

With the creative personalities at Design of Today, Danell says it's important to offer flexible schedules because they need it for inspiration. Flexibility allows them to draw on more influences, think more clearly and out of the box and to enjoy input from many different sources...

For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
