KOUBI, Mali (AP) - A community official helping to bury victims from the Mali boat sinking one week ago says the death toll has risen to 68.
Hamadoun Cisse told The Associated Press on Saturday that fishermen had been able to recover more bodies though the true toll will likely never be known.
Passengers on the capsized boat said they believed hundreds of people were on the overladen vessel when it sank but the ship's owner did not have a full list of who was on board.
The boat traveling from the central Malian town of Mopti to Timbuktu in the north sank on the Niger River.
The accident took place near the village of Koubi, about four miles (seven kilometers) from Konna. Authorities said 210 survivors had been registered.
