MEDINA, Ohio (AP) - An attorney who's a registered nurse has been given the power to make medical decisions for a 10-year-old Ohio Amish girl who decided with her parents to end her chemotherapy treatments.
The county court appointment comes after an appeals court last week ordered the attorney should take over limited guardianship for the girl and decide whether she should continue leukemia treatments.
The Amish generally shun modern life. The girl's parents live in Medina (meh-DEYE'-nuh) County. They say they stopped chemotherapy because the effects were terrible and opted for "natural" medicines.
Doctors at Akron Children's Hospital say the girl will die without chemotherapy. They went to court to restart the treatments.
The girl's parents weren't at Wednesday's hearing. Their attorney tells the Akron Beacon Journal they still oppose resuming chemotherapy.
