WASHINGTON (AP) - The historic main building of the Library of Congress was evacuated after sprinklers went off in the building.
U.S. Capitol Police Lt. Kimberly Schneider says a water alarm went off in the Thomas Jefferson building Tuesday night just before 8 p.m. Library spokeswoman Gayle Osterberg says a sprinkler system in the cellar was activated but no one was hurt and no collections were damaged. Heat from a hot plate that was part of catering equipment activated the sprinkler system but there was no fire.
In addition to its book collection, the building completed in 1897 houses artistic, historic and cultural treasures. The building is located across the street from the U.S. Capitol.
