SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - U.S. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi says the United States should follow Puerto Rico's lead when it comes to maternity leave laws.

Pelosi spoke Tuesday while in Puerto Rico to participate on a panel organized by Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierliusi to talk about women's issues.

She praised the U.S. territory for awarding eight weeks of paid leave to women who recently had children and four weeks prior to the delivery if needed.

Pelosi said she would continue to push for equal pay and affordable health care while fighting gender discrimination at work.
