SALT LAKE CITY — Bingham High's special teams and defense combined to give the Miners an early lead as the South Jordan team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 48-15 win over the Hunter Wolverines.

Hunter entered Friday's game 2-1 after defeating Copper Hills 31-14 in a Thursday night game last week. Bingham entered the game with an unbeaten 3-0 record, coming off a 24-21 overtime win against Valor Christian from Colorado.

Bingham's defense started the game by holding Hunter to three-and-out. The special teams unit wasted no time as Chayden Johnston took the punt return 55 yards for the score to give the Miners an early lead, 7-0.

Hunter quickly responded as it's offense needed only three plays to knot the game 7-7 on quarterback McKay Medlinger touchdown pass to Joseph Tiatia.

Bingham's offense sputtered early, but its defense helped out with an interception by Sky Manu who returned it for the Miners' second touchdown of the game and a 14-7 lead.

Bingham's offense found its rhythm with two rushing touchdowns, one by Scott Nichols and the other by Aaron Marsh, to give the Miners a 28-7 lead. The defense wasn't finished with its scoring efforts, however, as Chase Messervy added a pick-six to extend the lead to 35-7 late in the first half.

Hunter tried to get something going before the half ended, but another turnover stopped its drive. Bingham took over at mid-field and added a 26-yard touchdown by Dalton Schultz for a halftime lead of 42-7.

The second half was quiet for both Hunter and Bingham. The Miners lone score came on its third interception return for a touchdown, this one by Harley Yazzie. The Wolverines followed late in the game with a rushing touchdown by Tiatia, who also added a two point conversion run.

When asked about areas where Bingham can improve in up-coming games, head coach Dave Peck responded, "We can't keep blowing coverages." He had good things to say about Hunter, adding, "They are a classy team, and (coach) Scott Henderson is the right guy for that job." David Winkworth
