SALT LAKE CITY β€” One of the great things about winning heading into your bye week is that everyone can relive and rehash the victory for a few more days.

Former BYU quarterback and coach Brandon Doman joined Rod Zundel and Jeremiah Jensen on SportsBeat to discuss BYU's impressive dismantling of the Texas Longhorns, 40-21, after losing to Virginia to open the season.

Leadership from the players was what Doman found to be the key to the quick recovery. "I've said all week long that it would be a test to these leaders β€” Kyle Van Noy and (Eathyn) Manumaleuna β€” step forward and really lead this team."

The former BYU quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator thought the coaches made strong adjustments. "They made some strategic moves that really made a difference in this game."

Offensive Line

The offensive line made huge progress from Game 1 to Game 2. Doman credits a reorganization of the offensive line. Ryker Mathews moved from left tackle to right guard. Michael Yeck moved from right tackle to left tackle. Manaaki Vaitai came off the bench to start at left guard, and Brock Stringham moved from right guard to right tackle.

"They put players in position to help them be successful," Doman said. "They came off the ball explosively. I loved watching Brock Stringham play right (tackle) and take the three-technique.

"The combination of the player personnel changes and the run attack β€” kudos to the coaches β€” I think they did a good job," Doman added.

The Read-Option

Taysom Hill ran for the second-most yards in BYU history with 259 yards.

One of the biggest improvements Doman saw was that Hill made better decisions handing-off or pulling the ball back on the read-option.

"I don't think that Taysom ran like this last week (against Virginia)," Doman said. "The confidence, the swagger, the explosion that we've seen him run with β€” I didn't see it last week β€” but, this game, this guy came out."

KVN Pressuring the quarterback

BYU All-American linebacker Kyle Van Noy had eight tackles, a sack and four hurries.

Doman was impressed with Van Noy's ability to beat the one-on-one matchups. "I watched the tackles try and block him and they just flat missed him three or four times, and he's such a smart football player ... he's an unblockable guy."
