Ashley Hayes ReportingThe first day of school is big day for both parents and their kids.
Now two organizations are giving parents a homework assignment to help them prepare their little ones for kindergarten.
The program is called Ready, Set, School, and as we said, this assignment is for parents.
A little later today the Utah PTA and State Office of Education will introduce the program to the public and hand out packets at the library.
Inside the packet is a handbook with 20 lessons. There are instructions, illustrations and a DVD.
The PTA says there are nearly 100-thousand three to five-year olds in Utah who will enter kindergarten in the next couple years. The goal is to get those kids in the mindset to learn and act appropriately inside a classroom.
They say the activities are fun and a great way for parents to be involved from the very start.
Barbara Smith, Utah Family Center: "Research is saying what a parent does at home not only before they start school, but during the school is one of the number one indicators of how well children do in their academic achievement."
The whole program is web-based and is free. Everything found in the packet can be found online at Readysetschool.org.
After the press conference this morning at 11:00, the packets will be available at the library and elementary schools.
