HOLLADAY — The annual Carmelite Fair will take place in September, and the nuns who live in the Holladay monastery are preparing to welcome the crowds.

This year, they want everyone to understand not only where and how they live — but what they do.

These sisters of Carmel sing the solemn Salve Regina. The Gregorian chant dates back to the Middle Ages. So does the woman who founded their order in the 16th Century — St. Teresa of Avila.

This group of Catholic women in Utah lives very much as those who came before. As cloistered nuns, they may not leave the grounds. Their work is prayer, for all people, everywhere.

KSL has been the only television station invited inside. Only their leader, the prioress, may speak with visitors through the grille.

"It's not only our country, there's other countries too that are not in good shape," said Rev. Mother Maureen, the Carmelite Monastery Prioress.

This time of year, they look forward to a successful fair in September.

"We sure hope so, because the fair workers have been working so hard," said Rev. Mother Maureen. "We trust the Lord will take care of the weather."

The sisters say they could not create the fair — which takes place on the grounds every year — without the volunteers. Hundreds of people from throughout the community and other faiths gather to help them.

People have been delivering donations for months. This year, there is more than usual.

"What we're looking for is every year to keep improving, keep raising more money," said festival chairman Lou Bertram. "Every cent goes to the sisters."

Volunteers say it's a privilege to help.

"They devote their lives to others and it seems like a small thing to do to work for them," said Janet Martineau, who's volunteering this year. "They pray for us. I think we get the better end of the deal."

The Carmelite Fair takes place Sunday, Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
