National horseshoe championship held in Utah

ST. GEORGE — More than 1,000 people from around the world are in St. George competing in the world championship of horseshoes.

The Spectrum of St. George reports that the two-week event is going on at the Dixie Convention Center. There are 42 horseshoe courts filled with clay set up for the contestants.

The website for the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association shows that this is the first time the event has been held in Utah since 1959. The world championships were in Utah 11 consecutive years from 1949 to 1959.

There are categories for men, women, children and elders.

Nearly $47,000 in prize money will be given out, with the winners of the men's and women's event getting $4,200 each. The elders' champion wins $3,500.
