VERNAL — A 49-year-old motorcyclist was killed when he crashed into a highway guardrail Saturday afternoon.
Just after noon, David P. Hellrigel, of Bozeman, Mont., was travelling south about 15 miles out of Vernal on the switchback portion of SR 191 when he failed to negotiate a turn and crashed into the guardrail.
According to officials, the bike did not stop for nearly half a mile after hitting the rail.
Before paramedics arrived, Hellrigel died on scene from his injuries. He was wearing a helmet.
Utah Highway Patrol said speed was not a factor in the crash, and the department continues to investigate the incident.
