The shortlist for the Orange Award for New Writers, an off-shoot of the Orange Prize for Fiction, has been announced and it includes British author Naomi Alderman.

Alderman has been shortlisted for her novel entitled Disobedience.

According to the BBC, Alderman left her marketing job at a law firm in New York to become an author after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001.

In addition Olga Grushin has been nominated for her novel The Dream Life of Sukhanov and Yiyun Li has been nominated for A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.

The award recognises the best first work of fiction published in the UK and written in English by a female author. This winner is scheduled to be announced on 6 June in London.
