SALT LAKE CITY — The action-adventure film "Jack the Giant Slayer" has only been in theaters for about a month, but it could become one of the biggest box office flops of all time.

The fairy-tale twist on Jack and the Beanstalk didn't resonate with audiences and the film now stands to lose between $125 and $140 million according to "The Hollywood Reporter."

The film, directed by Bryan Singer, had a production budget of nearly $200 million and a marketing budget north of $100 million. As of April 2, 2013, "Jack the Giant Slayer" made just over $65 million domestically and $158 million worldwide. That kind of discrepancy in budget and profit is going to be a substantial hit to the co-financiers of the film, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. But, it's likely too early for the studios to panic.

Both studios have teamed up and are releasing some huge films this summer including "Pacific Rim," "The Hangover Part III" and "Man of Steel." Those three films alone should put the studios back on track, but if not, Warner could be in real trouble.

So far in 2013 the studio has put out duds like "Gangster Squad," "Beautiful Creatures" and "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." But "Jack the Giant Slayer" is far and away the biggest disappointment so far in 2013. Warner Bros. needs a hit, and it likely has it with June's "Man of Steel."

The estimated loss puts Jack on par with the biggest flops of all time including "Battleship," "John Carter," and the infamous "Cutthroat Island."
