Gene Kennedy Reporting It was a slick night on the roads, but wet weather is not to blame for a nasty head-on collision overnight. The Highway Patrol says a woman driving on the wrong side of I-15 is to blame.
A lot of people called in to try to get this woman off the road before the crash. The 911 lines were lighting up around 1:00 this morning.
The first caller spotted the wrong-way driver at 400 South. Troopers tried to catch up to the driver but couldn't make it before the crash.
When the woman got to 3300 South, she crashed head-on into a truck with two people inside. The wrong-way driver suffered serious injuries. She was airlifted to University of Utah hospital.
Fortunately the two people in the truck were wearing their seat belts and their air bags deployed. They apparently were not seriously injured.
What the Highway Patrol can't explain is how this woman was driving on the wrong side of the freeway for some 30 blocks. Accident investigators do not think speed or slick roads were a factor.
The first thing they'll look into is alcohol, then drugs. The Highway Patrol is trying to find out if she was impaired behind the wheel.
