Sandra Yi ReportingThis is the story of two women, a baby and a stolen ID.
Ten days ago, a baby was born at University Hospital and the mother wasn't who authorities thought she was. It was a bizarre case of stolen identity. Now Dorothy Moran is in jail, thanks to the woman who may be the baby's paternal grandmother.
Dorothy Moran kept her head down as police took her to jail. She was arrested this afternoon at a home in Midvale. This is the woman who told authorities where they could find her.
Jane Haslam: "I'm sad that this whole thing is happening. It's an innocent baby here."
Jane Haslam may be the baby's grandmother, but she's never seen her.
Jane Haslam: "I don't even know if she has a name. I don't know anything about her, just that she was born, and it was a girl."
Haslam believes her son Adam is the baby's father. She says Moran called him on April 22nd when she went into labor.
Jane Haslam: "She called, crying, saying she had the baby alone and no one was there, ‘Please come up, please come up. Come see the baby, and I'm under this name.'"
Police say, she went to the hospital posing as Anndorie Sachs, a woman whose driver's license and checks were stolen from her car three months ago. Haslam knew Moran had outstanding warrants. The baby also tested positive for methamphetamine.
Jane Haslam: "I don't think she had any intention of just to say, 'Here's the baby, I'm walking away. I don't want you anymore.' I think she's more afraid of going to jail."
Now Moran is in jail for ID fraud. Haslam's son is also in jail on drug charges and wants to take a paternity test. If Haslam is the grandmother, she wants to give the baby a good home.
Jane Haslam: "I believe that if it's my son's that I'd be the most stable place for her to go, and I could love her."
A spokesperson for the Division of Child and Family Services couldn't comment on Moran's arrest, but he says the investigation is ongoing.
The baby is out of the hospital and in foster care, for now.
