Girls basketball: Riverton wins first basketball state championship

TAYLORSVILLE — Gerika Ballard fought off an illness to score 13 points leading Riverton to a 41-37 win over Layton in the 5A Girls state championship game.

It was the first girls basketball state championship and the first state title outside of track and field in the schools history.

Layton upset Alta in the quarterfinals before stunning No. 1 and undefeated Bingham in the semifinals but their impressive tournament run came up short.

The Lancers were led in scoring by Maddi Smith with 13 points and9 rebounds. Jaden Anderson also had an impressive performance for the Lancers scoring 11 points and pulling down 8 rebounds.

Riverton's Whitney Saunders was named tournament MVP by the Deseret News. She scored 9 points and hauled in 12 rebounds in the championship game.
