Some can say they helped build the Salt Lake Valley ..... James R. and John Blazzard of Blazzard Lumber have the proof .... John Pack, their great-great grandfather, actually cut and delivered the first logs to Brigham Young when the pioneers settled in the Salt Lake Valley... If you ask, they'll show you a copy of the receipt Brigham Young signed.
John Pack came in with the first company of pioneers, and later, he traveled between Missouri and Utah to bring other groups here. Today, six generations of his descendents have served Utah's growing building needs through Blazzard Lumber ... A great example of why Forbes magazine named Utah as the best state for business and careers for the third year in a row.
Blazzard Lumber averages somewhere between 15 and 20 direct employees. The timber business has always been tough, but John says it's even tougher now with what's happening globally. The brothers have been running the operation since their dad, the founder of Blazzard Lumber, died in the late 90s. They've been involved with the business since they were old enough to walk. The Blazzard family is an important part of the Kamas economy.
Utah has a unique product to offer the timber business. In the mountains above Kamas, there's the High Engelmann Spruce. Utah is one of the only places where you can find this wood, used to make paneling and trim. This is a niche market, so there's a big demand. It grows in Utah's high elevations, and Blazzard Lumber can harvest it successfully...You'll find Engelmann Spruce in places like the Mirror Lake Highway over Wolf Creek Pass or on the way to Strawberry Reservoir.
Blazzard Lumber gets most of their trees from Wasatch Cache and Uintah Forest They've never had problems with bears in all the years they've been in the business, but they work with a number of farmers and ranchers concerned with the wolves heading this way... Timber is a risky business but one that's highly rewarding... And this family business, Blazzard Lumber, is as Utah as it gets...
