May 01--Bailiwick Repertory Theatre, Lifeline Theatre and The Hypocrites are the leading recipients of 2006 kudos from the Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee, which has announced 112 nominations in 24 categories for its citation wing -- designed to honor the best non-Equity productions from the 2005-06 season of Chicago theater. Newer, emerging companies such as The House Theatre of Chicago and the Steep Theatre Company also did well.
Shows that the volunteer committee of theater lovers especially liked this year include Lifeline Theatre's "Queen Lucia" (eight nominations), Raven Theatre's "Dancing at Lughnasa" (five nominations) and Circle Theatre's "What's Wrong With Angry" (five nominations).
Nominations for best production (play) were: Infamous Commonwealth Theatre's "The Kentucky Cycle, Parts 1 & 2"; Pegasus Players' "Two Trains Running"; "Dancing at Lughnasa"; The Hypocrites' "Death of a Salesman"; "What's Wrong With Angry?"; The Hypocrites' revival of "True West"; and "Time and the Conways" at the Griffin Theatre.
Best production (musical) nods went to "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (Bailiwick Repertory) and "Queen Lucia."
Nominations for the sought-after Jeff Citation for best ensemble went to the casts of "A Jacques Brel Revue: Songs of Love and War" (Theo Ubique Theatre Co. with Michael James); "Book of Days" (Steep Theatre Company); "The Kentucky Cycle, Parts 1 & 2"; "Time and the Conways"; and "Two Trains Running."
Actors celebrating include, for principal roles, Paul D'Addario, Richard Cotovsky, Brad Harbaugh, Jurgen Hooper, Bill McGough, Paul Noble, Alfred H. Wilson, Elizabeth Dowling, Krista Forster, Kate Harris, Kat McDonnell, Donna McGough, Simone Roos, Rebekah Ward-Hays, Jamie Axtell, Jason Bowen, Ryan Lanning, Stan Q. Wash, Katie Jeep and Monique Whittington.
In the non-Equity Jeffs, multiple awards can (and often are) made in each category. The Jeff Citations will take place June 5 at the Park West nightclub, 322 W. Armitage Ave., and are open to the public for $25 in advance or $30 at the door.
