Sydney (dpa) - The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the 1994 film of two drag queens and a transsexual putting on a cabaret performance in the Australian Outback town of Alice Springs, is to be turned into a musical, news reports said Monday.
The stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning comedy is to have its world premiere at Sydney's Star City casino complex on October 7.
Written and directed by Stephan Elliot, the low-budget Priscilla starred Terence Stamp, Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce. Lizzy Gardiner won an Oscar for the costumes.
"The casting will be sensational," stage director Simon Phillips told Australia's AAP news agency. "We have remarkable people at the back of our minds."
Production staff from the box-office smash are working on the musical, including Elliott, Gardiner and producer Michael Hamlyn. But don't expect Mama Mia in the reprise: Phillips said purchasing the rights to use Abba's famous song was simply too expensive.
