Child, one other sought in Provo Canyon burglary

PROVO — Police are looking for a man and a child who committed a burglary in Provo Canyon.

A home in the Springdell neighborhood in Provo Canyon was burglarized Dec. 17 at about 11:35 a.m. A female resident arrived home and saw two people in the house, who then ran out the back door.

The woman followed the two burglars and was able to get a detailed description, which was corroborated by a neighbor who witnessed the two in the area.

"This was pretty brazen. For someone to go into a home where people are there or close to being there in the middle of the day is pretty scary," said Sgt. Spencer Cannon, with the Utah County Sheriff's Department. "The woman was fortunate, I think, that they were more worried with getting away than they were about hurting somebody."

The first burglar was described as an adult male, 20–25 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a medium build. He had dark hair, a dark complexion and was unshaven with a scruffy appearance. He was wearing a brown and black coat, jeans and boots, according to witnesses.

The second burglar was described as a male between 8 and 12 years old who was "shorter than average," according to police reports. He was wearing a light-colored jacket, white athletic shoes, and a dark knit hat or hood. The apparent juvenile was wearing Nike "Shox Monster" shoes, according to witnesses.

"We don't know the connection between the man and the apparent juvenile," Cannon said. "But for an adult to be involving an apparent juvenile in something like that is disturbing."

The burglars stole more than $10,000 in jewelry and a high-end Nikon camera, according to police. There was no car witnessed at the scene, and police are unsure of where the suspects went when they fled.

The homeowners are offering a cash reward for information leading to the suspects' arrest.
