In 1900, one of Utah's first canal systems had just been installed in Northern Utah. John Y. Ferry came to Utah from Illinois about that time. He immediately saw the business potential in the irrigated land and started putting his business knowledge to work. He began developing plots of land and then selling them to farmers. Of course he saw the value in the land and started buying parcels for his own family. This was the beginning of JY Ferry and Son, which is still operating over 100 years later.
Today, Joel Ferry, who helps manage this growing ranch in Corinne, says their focus is split between farming and cattle. This diversification has been key in helping get JY Ferry and Son through the tough times.
JY Ferry and Son has a thriving cow/calf operation with around 850 cows that give birth every year. The calves go to a feedlot where the Ferry family and their staff of 12 employees provide custom feeding for beef cows. And in the wintertime, they host around 6,500 head of calves from the mountain range who would otherwise struggle to find an adequate food supply.
JY Ferry and Son has a dedicated staff and customer base. In this business it's almost unheard of for a cowboy to stay with one ranch for 35 years and yet their employees have. Joel says this is because they focus on providing a quality product at a reasonable price and treating people right. The family is also involved with promoting agriculture in Utah.
