WENDOVER — A couple traveling on Interstate 80 rolled their car after hitting an ice patch early Sunday morning.
At 5:07 a.m., 33-year-old Ethan Pitts, of Sandy, was driving the vehicle when he hit a patch of ice that caused him to lose control. The vehicle slid off the left side of the road and spun 180 degrees before rolling onto its roof.
Kristina Tree, 24, of Sandy, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle, which caused fatal injuries, troopers said. Tree was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
Pitts was wearing his seat belt, but was critically injured in the accident. He was transported by ambulance to University Hospital.
