NORTH OGDEN — Neighbors are stepping in to help a family forced from their home due to a fire Monday night.
Investigators said the homeowner, Luke Nelson, started a fire in a wood-burning stove in the basement of his home. He went upstairs and 20 minutes later, around 7:15 p.m., a neighbor knocked on the door to alert him to flames coming from the roof.
Nelson believed the fire started in the chimney of the wood-burning stove.
Nelson's family safely evacuated the home and moved two vehicles by the time firefighters arrived. It took crews about an hour to extinguish the fire.
"It's just tough," said Dave Wade, deputy fire chief of the Northview Fire District. "Being as cold as it is changes the dynamics of how you fight these fires. (You have to) take things slower. Water and these temperatures don't mix well."
According to the Standard Examiner, Nelson, his wife Amanda, and their four boys are all OK. They're now staying with neighbors until they can figure out what to do next.
Damage to the home will be assessed Tuesday.
