Pruning Grapes
)There are three types of grapes. The most common of them are American and French American because of their cold hardiness.
)It does not matter which type you have, you can prune them all the same way.
)There are three common pruning methods: cane, spur, and do nothing. Most varieties don't care which method you use, but for prime quality grapes use the cane or spur method.
)Some things to remember: Prune during the dormant season, preferably when the temperatures are in the positive double digit range. Grapes make a large amount of new growth every year, so you will be removing large quantities when you prune.
)You can train the vines at any time. If you have an old vine you can prune it all the way back to the trunk.
)Newly planted vines are the easiest to train.
)Grapes produce fruit on last years growth, from two year old or older wood.
